So do I! I go to the theatre to be challenged and to have a cathartic moment. I don’t go there for a live stage rehash of what I see on TV or in the movies.

Audience are, in fact, incredibly easy to offend — often by mistake and not by plan. So the Playwright not only needs to be aware of the subtle offending, but also the unintentional one as well.

Crudite is good for health!
On a serious note, if a writer can “offend” the audience that means he/ she has achieved what he wanted — he/ she has struck a raw nerve somewhere and invoked emotion which was unknown and would make the audience think.
Many time the audience doesn’t want to be “offended” because I think they do not want to go out of their comfort zone of known reactions.
